What role[s] do expectations play in norm dynamics?

Despite the central importance often placed on expectations in defining norms, are routinely invoked a fleeting manner. When they are, utilised many different ways, without anyone acknowledging this, which creates confusion. The article argues that should not be viewed as playing singular role norm process. Instead, it puts forward three roles play dynamics: (i) norms embody expectations, (ii), generate (iii), actor have direct bearing how travel. In so doing, seeks to catalyse much-needed conversation over concept of dynamics. To aid interdisciplinary analysis draws Political Psychology, Economics, and Science highlight other disciplines spent decades analysing complexities expectations. conclusion offers five recommendations guide future research this underexplored issue.
